Memorial Celebration for Sanbonita "Destiny" Crane American DHQ August 27, 2011 Houlihan's (Tower City)
Chat Bout Cleveland would like to thank Destiny's family for allowing CBC to report services, memorial and other information during this difficult time. The outpouring for Destiny in the news of her passing spread on an International level. I have had the pleasure of knowing Destiny since 1997 as a family friend, I was honored to lend a hand to Sandy's family not only though Chat 'Bout Cleveland, but more importantly, as a friend.
It was all love, laughter and smiles as friends and family of Destiny gathered for a Memorial Service on Saturday, August 27th. Houlians at Tower City (Destiny's favorite resturant) was the place were people from as far as Toronto, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Minnesota joined in to share memories of our dear friend.
Guests to the memorial were greeted by Destiny's daughter Shantia (dressed in her Navy uniform), Mother and Grandmother. Destiny's granddaughter was also all dressed in a Navy inspired outfit. The family welcomed guests with a beautiful printed keepsake of the memorial and homecoming events, courtesy of Corkscroo (U Can Printing).
As people filled the room, they were able to view a photo collage created by daughter Shantia and a cake, bearing a photo of Destiny. The collage captured her life in all phases and guests began to point out their pics with Destiny and, for some, that is where many of the tears began.
Shortly following appetizers, the memorial service began. I was honored and obliged to progress the service. There was an intent to keep the flow of the celebration of life joyous- since Destiny would have wanted things done just so.
The Memorial started off by 10 year old songstress, Tashaya singing a song she written in honor of Destiny. Guests were blown away by the energy of her performance.
Friends and family began to share some memories of Sandy " Destiny". Some have known Destiny for a lifetime, some for 25 years and some a shorter time, but, all the stories were filled with laughter and most importantly, love. Soon, memories swirled around the room, 'Remember that time, she....' and the laughter filled the room even more.
"Remember when she was on TheRicky Lake Show?" "No, she was on there (The Ricky Lake Show), TWICE!" Then someone else added. "... AND The Montel Williams Show!"
More stories were shared by childhood friends Baby and Carmen, Scott, Fudgie Springer from Pittsburgh, Karmen with a "K" from Minnesota and a friend who took an 8 hour bus trip from Toronto to pay her respects. The spirit in the room continued as Tanika, one of the servers who saw Destiny many times she visited Houlihans shared a moving theatrical perfomance. Truly awesome!
The memorial was well attended with Destiny's friends and family, including close friends Jennifer and Daphne, Leisa Engel, Glamma G, Mahogany, and Ms. Trini, just to name a few. Baltimore dancer, Famousintellc Icon was on hand to read a spoken word piece written for the occasion. The memorial came to a close as Destiny's youngest daughter, Shantia shared endless memories of her mom and her strong influences throughout her life. After hearing all the stories and seeing the amount of people who loved and respected Destiny, Shantia renamed her mom, 'The International Dancehall Queen'.
Anyone in attendance could not help but notice a feeling of peace and relief in Destiny's family. The memorial was truly beautiful and for that moment, we were all able to come together share Destiny's life. Chat 'Bout Cleveland would like our readers to continue to hold up this family with your thoughts and prayers.
