On Saturday, July 11th masses from Detroit, Cleveland, Minnesota, Houston, California and NYC ascended to Chicago for the 4th Midwest Dancehall Queen Competition.  The event took a brief hiatus in 2008, but showed no sign of slowing down as this event was the biggest and best competition to date.

The event, presented by chicaogreggae.com, Big Head Promotions and Bad Girl Promotions  featured 8 contestants including Spice 2009 (DHQ 2nd Place winner in Detroit), Ms. Che from Cleveland, Acacia, from Oakland, Qwen Flexx from Bronx, NYC, Minnesota Dancehall Queen Karmen, Madd Danca from Philadelphia, as well as Star and Brat , both representing Chicago.

Hosted by Chicago's own D Mose, contestants were introduced to the crowd at the Kinetic Playground sporting apparel by Chicago based design company, Jamaica Star.  Each contestant added their own flair to the introductions as further proof that this would be an event like no other..

As anticipated, the competition was steep as contestants took the stage and control of the crowd with a host of splits and headstands as well as their versions of the latest dances including the Gully Creepa and Nuh Linga.

While judges deliberated after round 1, Midwest DHQ, Pocahontas treated the crowd to an exhibition performance - in true DHQ fashion as she burned up the runway leaving no doubts as why she was crowned in 2006.

Judges Coco (from Milwaukee), 92.3 DJ Silky Smooth (AKA Ladies of Reggae), Art Bailey and Zeen (of TRC Events) had a tough decision for the first elimination as contestants Karmen (Minnesota), Brat (Chicago), Madd Danca (Philly), Acacia and Qwen Flexx (NYC) all advanced to the 2nd round.

Round 2 began with as much fire as the first as with a variety or performances from Karmen's tribute to MJ to a Gwen Flexx ?wig toss' (you had to be there) and everything in between including more headstands and much more madness..

After a white hot performance by the 2007 DHQ, Ms. Skittlez, and all the smoke cleared, the judges were ready to announce a winner.

Congratulations to Brat from Chicago, Winner of the 2009 Midwest Dancehall Queen Competition!  Brat will move on to represent the Midwest in the 11th Annual International Dancehall Queen Competition in Montego Bay on August 1st.  To see Brat's performance, click here.

Congratulation also goes out to 2nd place winner Gwen Flexx from Bronx, NYC and 3rd Place Winner, Madd Danca, from Philadelphia.  (The Chat ?Bout is these ladies vow to return in '10 to claim their title!)

Big up Chicago's own Candiva, Styles (Reggae Girls Entertainment), DHQ Selebrity and Glam from Detroit, Chicago's Ms. Bee, Keisha, Poochie, Adonia, and WS from H-Town were among the many in the building.  Big up Nosaki of Bad Man Ting and Infini Images in the place to capture all the action of the event.
